I see many touchscreen kits on eBay for the AAO and EEE PCs, and I was wondering how well they worked. It would be pretty awesome to have a touchscreen AAO (especially with the added touchscreen compatibility of Windows 7). So to those who have made the modification: How difficult was it on a scale of 1 to 10? Does it work well? Quality? Any problems in installation? Who/Where did you buy it from?

    Thanks for any info.

Also, I'm referring to the solderless installations, like this one: http://tinyurl.com/coeh7h

Can anyone attest to the quality of the touchscreen in the link I provided? I don't want some cheap POS that will break after two months of use.

YES, toptouchscreen is first class. Small hub and rubber spacers to hold the bezel off the screen.

    I highly recommend.

    Thanks. :D

The bargain price made me hesitant, but I'm glad to know it's quality stuff.

Oh yes, is there a touchscreen guide for solderless versions that is as complete as the one in the Guides forum?

That said the solderless touchscreen is not for the fainthearted!! The instructions refer you to a couple of You Tube videos made by an American girl, showing you how to strip down the aspire one, fit the touch screen, re-assemble and load the drivers etc. Because the solderless touchscreen uses the WebCam connections you have to remove the LCD and disconnec the webcam and connect a lead to the webcam and the disconnected webcam lead. Unfortuneately, the lead supplied to connect to the original webcam lead is too short. On my Aspire the webcam and microphone leads are bound together. to get enough length back to the controller board, I had to remove the cloth sleeving, thus separating the Webcam & Mic leads - this took ages and could have so easily gone wrong!!
The video show taping the touchscreen down with double-sided tape (but non was supplied) - then 'rubber' strips were laid around the touchscreen BUT not on top of the touch screen. A strip of double-sided foam was supplied that applied around the touchscreen. Or course now there are many more leads to route through the hinges ie the new lead to the Webcam, the lead to the touchscreen and on the other side the lead from the original webcam lead. I damaged a couple of plastic catches on the lower edge of the screen - where surprisingly there aren't any screws (top & sides have screws??) so when I re-assembled the screen there was a gap (I had to use superglue to close the gap!).

Some ebay instructions talk about 4 rubber shock absorbers?? there were four rubber corners with kit but no mention of their use on the videos - I assumed they were part of the packaging?? - I haven't fitted them and the touch screen sits flush on the LCD screen held central bu the double sided foam strips, but the screen seems OK - it worked first time!!

Now I had already done the solder bluetooth mod and wished I'd bought the solder touchscreen kit (this was more expensive?) this was there would only be the cable to/from the touch screen and the supply to the controller would be to the unused header under the main motherboard - there would certainly be a lot less diassembly and reassembly!
But it least it works, so bluetooth mod, added 60GB Zif drive, extra memory and now a touch screen! - I hope it doesn't crack??

Toptouchscreen kits come with rubber shock absorbers which are mounted around the TS panel as spacers to keep the bezel from touching the TS panel. The Toptouchscreen instructional JPEGs clearly show the shock absorbers location. If you don't have the instruction, you could email toptouchscreen or locate the thread on this site where someone has linked the instructions.

Also the solderless kit can be installed as a solder kit off of the CN11 internal USB header. This would save from having to mess with the web camera.

Actually I noticed I got my screen from a different seller:-

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=280336982280#MRLOCATE

However, there are no spacers for the touch screen, looking at the pictures on the auction I now notice that the WebCam & Mic cables have been separated by removing the cloth sleeving!

The only instructions supplied were the links to the You-tube video:-

Part 1 dis-assembly of the aspire one

Part 2 - Fitting the screen and re-assembly

Part 3 - installing the drivers

I think in hindsight I would agree that it would have been better to leave the webcam along and solder the usb power lead the spare USB header on the motherboard..

The rubber shock absorbers were a big reason for me getting the kit from toptouchscreen

Anyone tried the touchscreen from ebay seller onetouch4sale? They suggested to use Copper Foil Tape "In order to aviod any overheat problems on P.C., it is recommended by our Engineering Dept". Anyone bought from these guys? Any comment? They do have a USB wire included in the auction picture, wonder if the extra USB port will work with those tiny bluetooth module?

Yes, it's the one I got! As I said you will have to seperate the Mic & Webcam harness because the USB lead they supply isn't long enough! But the screen does work fine under WinXP & MacOSX..

However! I have just noticed something.. The only instructions supplied with the touch panel kit refer to the You-tube video's - where the ribbon cable in on the right side?? However, on the auction photo's the ribbon is on the left hand side. The panel appears to work fine though so I don't really want to disassemble everything again - would it make any real difference??
    All the best

Have you try if your USB harness will work? I am looking to have those tiny bluetooth module installed on to the touchscreen kit without soldering.

And did you put on the copper foil? You think that is useful? Is that getting hot?

The Controller board doesn't appear to get very hot, so far I haven't fitted the copper tape.
As far as bluetooth goes I soldered connection from the disassembled bluetooth dongle to the spare pins on the wifi PCI-E socket. As I said in hindsight I could have bought the solder kit and used my existing connections??

I've installed a Onetouch4sale solderless Touchkit in a AAO 110 with ubuntu 9.0.4 and I'm having some problems.

    1) I also had the short wires and had to un-wrap the fabric tape from the camera wires (it seems to be the eeepc kit instead of AAO)

    2) The USB harness where also missing (write to the seller and says he will mail them)

    3) There is a little interference in the web cam. When you touch the screen you see a kind of noise in the webcam image. (does anybody else has this problem?)

    4) The controller board is extremely hot (you can't even touch it) and after 15-20 min. the touchscreen stops working. You have to shut down the computer and wait until is cold (so I never can use it).

I'm almost sure there is a problem with the controller board. Does anybody else noticed the overheat that makes the TS stop working or the webcam interferences??

    Thanks.

P.S. Quite hard to find egalax drivers for UNR 9.0.4. (x server 1.6) If some one needs them, just ask for them.
