Okay, so as promised, the first round of results.

I have added the controller board to the motherboard, and it immediately detected the board that I added to USB. I have identified the points on the board that have voltage for the touchscreen controller portion. The problem now that exists is, I have looked at a post here: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=37050

The problem is, the wires for the controller are two orange, one red, one black. I have: Red, White, Green, and Black.

As a result, I don't have ANY idea where they go on the board, and I don't want to risk guessing that red is positive and black is negative. On a controller board, I don't have any way of really knowing what goes where.

I'm relying on this "Jeff" guy from fido-dido to help me out, but I'm not 100% sure it will work. I'll check a few other posts - I know Chippy from jkkmobile did some work on it as well, and he may have a different color scheme set up. I took pictures as I did the installation, so don't worry - I've got pictures to show. Just not yet. ;-)

Installation successful. I need to install all of the software and make sure that it works with the X Windows installation. I will be posting results of that soon. :)

So far so good. The order of the wires, for the record, is: RED GREEN WHITE BLACK, starting from the keyed hole.

Using Linux Gentoo 2008.0 right now, as I didn't feel like shelling out more money for XP. Besides, I'm more of a Linux nut when it comes to homebrew notebook use and software. I'm working on a MID distribution of Linux, and this is a perfect development platform, since most Intel MIDs coming out are going to be Atom based. Seemed like a perfect, natural pairing.

The touchscreen probably works - I just need to get the damned thing recognizing the USB Module in the kernel :) I'm recompiling with hopes that it will work fine.

Works great. I'm installing xine on the Gentoo box, and will be posting information on how to get it working. I need to move the touchscreen module so there's not a slight bulge in my case, but all in all. 100% success. Very simple solder job, very simple job getting the software working. I'm VERY VERY happy with this. This will be a *GREAT* box to develop on.

I'll post pictures shortly, and hopefully, this will make it to UMPCPortal and Pocketables!!!

    Nice! Congrats!

Please post some pics for us! ;)

Can you comment on screen reflection before and after the touch-screen mod? (I'm one of those guys who doesn't like "glossy" LCD screens. I hate to see reflections. Love my Acer's TM 8103WLMi Matte 1680x1050 screen :D ).

The price for this touch screen panel is about US$ 66 right?

My mind is full of ideas and I don't even have a A1 yet! Hope I find it in Amsterdam!

Yes, the original screen is glossy, and reflects glare pretty well. However, with the new touchscreen overlay, it cuts out the glare, and makes the display very nice. So, if anything, it makes the display look better! :)

It's also nice that there's touchscreen for it too.

Great work Kenshin. I hadn't been thinking of doing this but I have followed the touchscreen mods on eeeuser and it seems it is slightly easier on the One.

I would be very interested in seeing where you tapped the USB signal. I am intending to install a USB hub inside mine (I have an absolutely tiny one that's about 1cmx2.5cmx0.6cm that will surely fit easily) so I can install various other bits such as a bluetooth dongle and a GPS receiver so I shall need to know where to solder it to.

My other question relates to the thickness of the touchscreen. On the eee, installing the touchscreen resulted in a slight bulge in the screen bezel. Can I take it from what you have said that this is not the case with the One?

There's a slight bulge, but it's not too bad. It's not really that noticable.

So, now I'm thinking of adding two additional mods:

1 - Remove the WiFi card and replace it with a 3G HSDPA card, but not sure where to buy, or what is available.
2 - GPS Module that can be hooked up to the USB, and wired internally.

You found a USB Hub that's small? Where could I get one like it? I'm thinking of buying one myself, and using some desoldering braid to get rid of the soldering points so I can make my own and wire the USB stuff internally a little better.

I may have also developed a short in the sound, as it's not playing sound for me right now. But then again, that could just be the sound drivers I'm using.

But I'd be interested in finding out how you did the USB Hub. Do you have a make/model? I'd love to add one to this thing. That, and GPS.

Could you (if you haven't already) snap a couple of shots that show the bulge, as well as you can manage, and throw them up with the rest? Then maybe we can get someone to duplicate the shots on an unmodified unit for before-and-after. :)

I purchased a touch-screen kit for my EeePC, but chickened out and never actually installed it; partly because it sounded like the bulge issue had been underestimated.

Sure thing. I don't have a picture of the display before the bulge, but afterward, I definitely do :)

can't imagine it would be so bad as so the lid won't close, but it'll be interesting to see.

No, in fact, it closes just fine. There's a strange problem with it on the start-up of the device, however. When I move my finger around on the display, it seems to jump to the top of the display, then it eventually evens out. I'm wondering if I have a short somewhere in the display, so I'm going to test this on Monday when I get the USB Hub hardware. Once that's in my hands, I'll be testing things out again, and hopefully this will correct the problem.

Props to you, Kenshin - that's a great idea for a mod!

...Just wondering whether you had any final pictures of the install up around the net anywhere yet?

I'd love to see how you've accomplished it so i've got a half-decent idea of what's involved (and i'm sure there are many like me wondering too).

    Cheers pal,

Not yet. Patience - the pictures will be coming shortly. I need to find time in my busy schedule to get everything completed. The touchscreen - as it occurs - has a little bit of a short due to the fact that I have moved the wires around, and they were mashed up against the case. I am working on rerouting everything with a new hub, and that's what's taking me the longer time. I'll be posting shortly.

I found it on eBay. This is the same http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-High-Speed-4- ... .m14.l1318 .

Although it doesn't look that small in the picture, once you take it apart it is absolutely tiny. It also has the advantage that the sockets are not soldered directly onto the board but attached by wires so you won't have to desolder the sockets nor solder new wires onto the board.

I can post a piccie of it after disassembly if you like.

PS Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been on holiday.
