The power consumption of the hub controller(including touch + usb hub) is about 120 mA

Another sucker chiming in with a cracked panel from dealextreme. A lot more packing than was previously mentioned ( a bunch of bubblewrap, cardboard around it, and in a bigger envelope. However I think they are just cursed. I guess I will have to find another place to get a panel *sigh*

I don't know much about electricity... but not knowing what mA means and how mA's work, that doesn't sound like much with ~2200 mA battery. =P

I got an idea: software control. For example, to turn it on you simply tap it or use a switch. The latter doesn't need software, though...

    Is that legal? =P

Bleego - You broke a panel? Ouch, man. What places have you checked out besides dealextreme?

I haven't checked anything else out yet because I really don't know a lot of places, I will probably do ebay for another one. From what I understand Dealextreme doesn't give a flying frack what they break so I'm not going to even bother with them. I mostly went for it because I wanted something that I know would work with Mac OS.

I was going to suggest eBay. Another one is www.sourceitstore.com.

I'm sorry to hear about your screen. Where is it broken?

I would encourage you to not give up on them and contact them. Dealextreme says on their FAQ they offer RMA's.

Wow, the power of an open forum really brings out the curious cats....

I picked up my ONE last week, with in 2 hours had my um-175 cell modem cracked open and hardwired to the board...I just couldnt resist.

Im about to place my order on the screen and im extremely pleased with the amount of feedback everyone has provided on this install. Couldnt have made it any easier on a person...seeing as you guys had to suffer the trials and tribulations of custom application woahs... 90% of the hardware hacks one would want (gps, bluetooth and what have you's) is mentioned in the first thread ive read...three solutions...one more trip deep inside the guts of the accerone to solve every thing ive felt the accer was lacking

Well done guys thanks a ton... :D

I ripped the ribbon on the touchscreen and don't want to solder the wires together (too lazy and decided that for a vehicle mounted PC I don't really need it.... you'd have to see how it's mounted and try it out yourself).

If anyone wants that PM me or e-mail me at ([email protected]). Course remove the nospam.

If you want a touch screen, but don't want to put it in, why not buy it? All the labor is done for you. The only issue is you no longer have a warranty, but that would be the case if you had done it yourself anyway.

Plus it looks like it is a 160gb/6-cell version. I wonder why he's selling it.

The only thing I don't like about it is the visible wires for the touchscreen panel.

If you buy it, make sure to use the live.com cashback in order to get 25% off your buy-it-now purchase. Google "live.com cashback" to find out how it works.

Just placed an order on a soldering TS package from dealextreme. Hope they have improved the packaging as stated on their page, fingers crossed!

I watch lots of movies and intended to use the TS for sketching so this was something I was worried about too. Some areas are irksome whilst others are no bother at all. The short of it is that it gets in the way a little but not enough to outweight the benefits.

Looking at a bright flat coloured you can easily see the graininess, it looks like very fine random multicoloured noise. Its still visible with more complex images but not so obvious. In drawing and painting in photoshop you do notice it (as you're focusing more intently on the screen) but its not something that glares at you all the time and I found myself easily ignoring it at the start and after a day or so of use I'd totally adjusted to it. Watching movies you will have no problems at all as the picture moves too quickly for you to be able to stop and see the little specks. I mean it'll be a visible effect, but it wont send you into fits of rage before the end of the opening credits. Again, I dont notice it anymore.

The other thing (the one i worried about) was the actual transparancy level of the glass (as opposed to how it transmits).
The screen looks a little uglier when turned off. its grey instead of black, due to the differently textured surface. This makes the laptop look a fair bit less slick, as the black border is now significantly darker than the screen is. I'd thought that in sunlight it would be easier to see, as the light would be diffused rather than reflected, however it seems to reflect more light, just scattered further, so where you'd normally see the reflection of a lamps light, you now see a bright fuzzy blob. I avoid direct sunlight anyhow as its hard to see on any screen, and with interior lighting its not such a bother (though light sources outside the otherwise reflected area of the screen (which would normally have no effect) now interfere a little, which can be slightly annoying.

When the screen is turned on of course, its no darker, as the glass is clear.

Hope that clears things up a little. I should note that im a bit of a picky prat when it comes to things, and dispite how much most computer related things annoy me, the touch screen is something i'd install all over again if someone were to nick my aspire tomorrow. I'm just listing hinderences here but the amount of freedom it gives you vastly outweights the niggles.
I got mine from fidohub on ebay, incidentally. I got the one which requires soldering. It really isnt difficult when you solder onto the spots on the back of the motherboard.

Hey, I was contemplating doing a touchscreen mod to my acer (Vista, 160GB, 1GB), but the continually increasing prices (on ebay, it went from ~90+25 shipping to ~120+25 shipping) has turned me off from it. I found this touch screen at dealextreme http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18490, and I have a couple of concerns before I go about doing this:
first, it's designed for asus, but is there a reason that it would not work for the aa1?
second, has anyone recently received shipment from deal extreme, i've read a couple of posts on this forum regarding the cracked panels as a result of poor shipping, but the company seems to be improving (company's statement that it was changing shipment, & recent shipments seemed to come in a box (on the deal extreme forum...not sure how accurate this is)
third, does the package appear to be a solderless design with another usb output so i won't lose the camera?

Thanks, I've really enjoyed going through these forums, the comments have been mostly really insightful!

Just FYI, I've cancelled my order with dealextreme placed on Monday, because they are too slow to ship (5 days passed with no info), and wouldn't respond to any of my inquiries. I'll just call it a day!

if anybody has just the controller from the dealextreme kit, let me know. I fried mine while soldering the wires. If I can't get a replacement for the controller, I'll probably end up selling the panel and ordering the "easy and fun" kit from ebay. Please let me know if you have a controller from a cracked panel that you would like to sell me?

    Bought the
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Acer-Aspire-One-Eas ... m#MRLOCATE
kit and installed no hitches.. works like a champ, but makes the screen look a little fuzzy... It will work until I can get a capacitive touch screen for it. I'll already have the controller installed so hopefully it would be just a screen swap...
