Had a problem with the right button not working on the trackpad so I removed and reattached the ribbob cable and now it works. Problem is the synaptics driver stopped working and control reverted to standard ps2 mouse. I have removed the Synaptics software and tried reinstalling but it will not install. The installation appears ok but when I try and call up the options to set up scrolling etc. the interface will not accept any input, Also, the driver is not listed in Device Manager.

I have tried different versions of the driver but none of them will install. The trackpad works fine but I have no scrolling etc. only standard mouse functionality.

Any one got any ideas? Could there be a fault in the trackpad preventing the driver from installing? Before getting the right button to work be reseating the cable the driver would install ok.

    Any help appreciated,

Have you downloaded the latest driver from synaptics.com? I observed similar issues under Vista and sometimes the trackpad did not work at all, sometimes I could reactivate it by using an external mouse, and then suddenly it worked again. Sometimes I also got the system message that synaptics driver was hanging and will be terminated. After downloading the latest driver this is history for me.

yes, i have tried many different versions. I now am able to install the driver but it does not load on startup. If I run syntpenh from the synaptics folder under programs the driver loads and all functions of the trackpad are available.

Just cant seem to get it to load when the Acer boots though.

Are you actually manually uninstalling the old driver, rebooting, then installing the new driver? or are you just installing the new driver? Doing so can leave corrupted registry entries in place which can cause the newer driver to malfunction.

I have tried both methods. When i unintall it requires a reboot and a new mouse driver gets reinstalled automatically. I will give it another go now and see what happens and report back.

    Thanks for bthe suggestions both.

No, still no luck. Removed previous driver and downloaded a fresh copy of the driver from synaptics. It appears to install but does not load up. Went in to control panel and selected mouse but a message comes up saying it could not connect to the driver and choose yes to uninstall or no, select no and the touchpad control panel appears but cannot change anything. If i manually run SynTPenh from the synaoptice folder it all works properly until the next boot, where no scrolling is available or any of the other enhancements, only works properly after manually running the syntpenh file. Device Manager shows the touchpad installed (or at least a synaptics ps/2 port ponting device). Placed a link to syntpenh in startup folder but that doesnt envoke it either only a manual run.

I am beginning to think that maybe there is a glitch in my OS install and I may wipe clean and reinstall from scratch. This isn't a big problem but I do like to get things working properly - its a challenge!

    Update:

Well, I just wiped the Aspire clean and reinstalled Windows 7 followed by the synaptics driver and it all works as its supposed to, so it was a glitch with the OS install. Thinking back when I first installed Windows 7, it was at the time when the trackpad cable was not seated properly so maybe that upset the installation somehow.

Anyway, all is working now, thanks to all who commented.
