For a long while now, I've used the Truecrypt app for encrypted files. It is fast, handy, and importantly for me, works on both Windows and Mac OS X. It is, however, no longer supported by the anonymous and enigmatic creator. The final word was, quote, "Yes... TrueCrypt is still safe to use", but it doesn't hurt to start looking for alternatives.

Does anyone have a recommendation? Note cross platform compatibility is a must for my use. Thanks much.

Where I work we still use truecrypt. When news of the shutdown of support came around, a possibility that we came across was https://diskcryptor.net I didn't personally test it, but ive been told is pretty similar to TC. After a long search a manager settled on keeping the software we already have, so it was all pointless, cause the software creator says it's still safe...
You could check that one out.
