Some people have already mentioned it:
    http://www.umtsmon.org/
Not sure if this is an answer, but maybe this solves some problems.

I have downloaded and tested UMTSMON, and as a solution it works. It also has direct knowledge of usb_modeswitch and will warn the user if these tools are not installed.

The major pitfall of using UMTSMON is its demand that the PPP daemon be altered to be SetUID root, so that any user can execute pppd, but have it run under the context of the superuser. This is not needed by other solutions (such as wvdial or gnome-ppp), so umtsmon could be considered "lazy" coding. Having said that, the security model of the Aspire One default Linux installation is practically non-existent so umtsmon is only following a trend.

Users of other flavours of Linux who like security are best served by other solutions.
