Help- after 15 month of perfect service, I've fried the OS on my Linpus AAO110 ZG5 8meg HD, 512meg ram, 8meg SD integrated, bios V0.3109, Intel V1585. I installed that new power manager in software tweaks (that was supposed to get an extra hour out of the battery) and it worked on reboot, but did the second tweak to make sure the power off button worked, and didn't reboot after that.

But what I think happened was after played with Skype and video, tried to find or install audio recording software and opened Package Updater (add+remove), which locked up. Had the 7 or so general catagories open and couldn't move up or down, just kept checking and unchecking one box. Finally closed it and wanted to shutdown, but cap locks light was flashing, and forced a shutdown. Maybe it tried to install 150 programs.

Lo, on booting after password, I get a black screen, though mouse works. Over and over. Got any ideas for a fix w/o reloading OS?

I have the recovery DVD disc Linux v1.0.5, which I suspect is pretty old (bought this Christmas 2008 in Kiev), but this has Cyrillic keyboard and don't really want to lose it. Is there an updated version of that original Linpus (bootable) somewhere I can download (maybe with other needed software installed, like VLC)? Don't want to try anything else more resource hungrey, since 512k is at it's limit w basic Linpus. What is highest version that still works efficiently with only 512k ram? Before, I did have VLC stop playing Realplayer files without spastic off and on gaps; and noticed sudo su strangely wasn't asking me for password anymore

Saw an alarming post that said following the flashcard burning instructions on recovery DVD might wipe the computers second HD- anybody else have experience with this- don't think flatmate will like that much. I love this machine and use it for everything, and as it happens my full lappy has some unknown bug that is pegging resources out at 100%.

Not sure how you guys decide who to ignore.

Tried to burn USB stick from the DVD, but the first time after chose "burn USB" it sat and spun for 2-3 minutes without giving me the option of where to put it, so panicked and did hard shutdown. The second time I tried it started to load something without giving the option to "install OS, burn a USB stick", and was convinced that it was installing on the main computers drive so popped the power plug. The main computer booted up OK, but the next day, the motherboard failed with shorting etc.! Not my computer.

Finally yesterday talked someone at a computer shop to let me burn it (2 gig), and it all worked OK- getting a response within 30 seconds where to put it=- it showed only one item- the USB drive, and it took only 3 minutes or so to dump it on it. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OTHER USB things plugged in the computer! When finished CD tray opened. I grabbed my stuff, and hustled out while the guy was getting a safe screen on rebooting, without seeing if it had any problem. He could just recoer it with the hidden partition, supposedly.

Stick worked OK- I had 3 choices on F12 boot menu- the second was, I think, the SSD- the extended SD card memory (which was unplugged at the time), I used the 3rd: network USB boot, which worked. It took about 20 minutes with a nice screen and progress bar. 2-3 hours of updates (only had V1.05 dvd), firefox 3, skype, extended menu, still to do VLC and gthumb, and I'll be good as new.

What always amazes me is how someone will post a "help request" and then feel that he (or she) will receive an immediate reply. When the reply doesn't arrive in a timely fashion - you see something like: Not sure how you guys decide who to ignore.

Come on gang - member's aren't going to reply if they either don't have a solution OR don't use the same configuration.
