    Hello,
I am trying to upgrade WinXP Home on my Aspire AO751h netbook.

With many computers I have been able to copy the WInXP setup files to a partition on the HD, and run the upgrade from there without issue.

With this, I get a "disk read error - Press control-alt -delete to restart" when windows install process does it first reboot. I can change from the install in progress to the home edition.

I've tried with External CD, USB with same result.

I'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade this unit to XP (ie has anyone already done so). Advice on what to try next to make it so would also be good.

And the reason for this surely is that you want to connect your aspire one to a windows domain controller, cause theres no other reason to "upgrade" from home to pro...

I have to justify my reasons? Gosh, friendlylike.

A helpful post would of been better. If you dont know how, then you needn't snark to avoid saying you dont know.

I also think you're not so aware of the differences between the two OS's either if you thinks its only logging on to a Domain controller thats different, then I guess you're not tried to use XP home at a workplace, or even though much about it.

I mean, I would like to do that anyway (connecting to the DC), as using the netbook that work purchased for me at work would be really neat.
Its not likley to be able to used for much if I cant logon to the network like my older Asus EEE does, allowing me to remote desktop across my work place to fix things from the staff room.

The extended user secuirty stuff is nice. Being able to use "Power Users' for logon is much better imo than Admin. useful.
And NTFS Encryption! I mean, thats a useful feature for a easily stolen netbook.

I also use remote desktop (lacking n home iirc), offline files - invaluable with the wireless coervage and blank spots I have.

Scheduled tasks are also incredibly valauble to me. I like to set and forget tasks.

I don't need the roaming profiles, group policy, sysprep support on my personal netbook, but when I deploy them (future netbooks) amonst the students user base whether I can use XP pro or not will be a deal breaker for purchasing them.

As I've said, Other computers (including Netbooks) I havent had problems upgrading to XP pro. If the Acer AO751h can't, well then it cant. And essentailly that will stop our school buying them as inadequate for the roles we want them for- a shame as they are a nice model, but other brands are suitable for XP Pro, which is the major requirement.

Now have I justifed my choices enough for you to assist or admit you didnt know the answer?

    Yes, very clear indeed.

    No it's not possible.
But you might want to use Files and Settings transfer wizard from the accessories menu do a fresh install then reimport your profile.

I'm a bit late to this topic, but I just wanted to post a word of caution.

The full-disk encryption on XP Pro can easily be circumvented. E.g., I've recently downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (a must have freeware collection of rescue utilities). While playing with tons of software included with UBCD4WIN, I found a utility (salapasswd) that allows resetting any password on any XP account, or create a new Admin account. I tried it on my work laptop with XP Pro on it, and it indeed worked - I was able to change my own account (admin-level) password when I booted from UBCD4W. So I don't trust XP EFS at all, and I am currently looking for an alternate solution that works with netbooks without negative side effects (e.g. battery life hit).
