On my laptop, I hope to install a stand alone newer version of Windows on an external USB Hard drive (SSD) to use to get familiar and test with without altering the original internal window OS drive (for now).

I have the newer Windows on the drive and can swap it out for the original internal drive and it appears to work.

The question I have is can I leave the original drive in place, alter the boot sequence in the BIOS to read the USB first and use the newer external version of the OS when booting when it is plugged into the USB port provided that the USB is before the internal drive in the BIOS boot sequence?
Will the laptop ignore the internal drive and boot from the USB when it's plugged in?
I can continue to swap out drives in the internal bay but ti would be easier to nor have to.
