I have searched the forums but can't find an answer. I have a 512 ram 8 ssd aspire. i have installed rons tinyxp, but would like to have fuller version of windows xp. I have a legit copy and would like to buy an external hard drive, install xp on it, change the boot sequence, and run xp from the external hard drive. Ist question is this possible, and second, if i hook up the external hard drive to my hp laptop, will i be able install the xp from the cd/dvd drive to the external hard drive. Thanx for your help.

This is a good question. XP performs best with a traditional spinning drive. The BIOS allows you to change the boot sequence so that in theory you could boot first to a USB external drive whenever it's connected. The problem is that drive is gonna need XP installed on it with the drivers for the ONE. You could use a PC to install XP on the external USB HD, then plug it into the One, change the boot sequence and boot to the drive and see what happens. If you get that far that's pretty good, but most of the time if you boot a windows install onto a computer with a whole bunch of changes like diff motherboard/chipset/processor, the boot usually bluescreens and you have to repair windows.

If anyone's tried this I would like to know. I am in need of a solution similar to this. I wonder if perhaps using a USB external CD rom and also a USB external hard drive, you could install windows to that drive and have the option to boot to it when you have it plugged in. The question is would any of that process mess with the stuff on the 8gb ssd? One way to be sure would be to open the One up and remove it before trying this.
