You recommend AVG after last weekends "oopsie" ? I mean - distributing a virus update that stops windows from booting is not that.. how shall I put it... good.

As alternative for AVG I use Kingston Internet Security (180 days free trial) and find it less slowing my system down than others.

    1) Defrag is bad on an SSD,
    2) NOD32. Buy it. It's worth the money, has the smallest footprint and is just plain awesome.

Foxit PDF reader should be on the list, imo.
I'd also recommend CDBurnerXP for those who use writable optical drives.

Can you explain the oopsie part. My AAO is dragging and boot up takes forever. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong.

A few days before that post AVG (and therefor also NOD32 and other programs using the AVG definitions file) released a bad update. This update resulted in the scanner incorrectly identifying user32.dll as containing a trojan, and subsequently removing the file.

Unfortunately user32.dll is a rather essential part of windows. Removing it in fact makes windows unbootable. This thing effected tens of thousands of people and made international news.

However this was weeks ago and the problem has since been corrected. Booting also did not take for ever, but windows simply crashed during bootup. So it is extremely unlikely this is your problem...

Thanks for your reply. I'll keep checking to see what the problem is. My CPU performance is erratic, and I've run a scan, but it doesn't seem to pick up anything. Only new thing I installed is Steam so I wonder if there's a conflict. I'll see if there's a tech section...
