You'll probably need to provide more information about your problem...your explanation is rather vague.

Run it in a terminal and see what happens - you should, get error messages dumped there, if the program is starting and running into a problem (I've just tried it and even a working copy throws some errors and messages). If the error messages don't help you sort anything out, post them back here.

The command you need in the termninal is 'UIM' (all capitals).

I'm sorry, i don't really understand about using the terminal at all. Do i just type in UIM? If so this came up -

ln: creating symbolic link `/home/user/libfreebl3.so': File exists

    Eh?!!!! Means nothing to me!

It means something to me, but whether it makes sense may be another question!

It's complaining that it's trying to create a link to a library file, but it can't because the link name it wants to create is already there. The odd thing is that it seems to be trying to create this link in your home directory, which is a strange thing for a program to do: usually links to libraries are created in part of the non-user directories.

However, let's try humouring it and see if it helps. Either use the file manager to find the file 'libfreebl3.so' in your home directory, and rename it to something else (like oldlibfreebl3.so), or in the terminal do
    Code:
    mv libfreebl3.so oldlibfreebl3.so
which will achieve the same result. Now try running Messenger, preferably from the terminal again in the same way, so we can see if it generates any more errors.

Ok, followed your instructions and got this -

ln: creating symbolic link `/home/user/libnspr4.so': File exists

Sorry, missed your post on Friday.

Basically, that's the same message, just applying to a different library file. Do the same as before, but using libnspr4.so wherever it said libfreebl3.so before.

I suspect there may be a couple more of these to deal with - again, if you get the same sort of message (ln: creating symbolic link `/home/user/whatever.so': File exists) repeat the instructiosn renaing whatever.so to oldwhatever.so.

    Ok, i typed in

    mv libnspr4.so oldlibnspr4.so

and nothing happened, no more questions. Messenger still not working though?!!!

So, just to be clear, when you run Messenger from the terminal (UIM again), nothign happens? Do you just get back to the command prompt with no other messages and the messenger GUI doesn't start?

Oh God! Am I doing it completely wrong?!!! How do you run Messenger in the terminal? I just followed you instructions and typed in UIM in the terminal and that's when the ln: creating symbolic link `/home/user/libfreebl3.so': File exists appeared. I'm so sorry, I feel so stupid.

Yes, doping 'UIM' in the terminal is what runs it in the terminal so that you can see if it generates any messages. If you do that now, do you still get no error messages and nothing else happening?

Hi there I had the same problem and Messenger would not work until I had run all Live Updates. You access this through Settings. Then click on Live Update. Hope this helps :)

When i run 'UIM' it comes back with

ln: creating symbolic link `/home/user/libnss3.so': File exists

(p.s. does 'doping' mean typing it in?!!!)

    jwhite64:

Yes, I've run live update several times, but it didn't change anything with messenger. Thanks anyway.

OK, same error again, different library file.

Let's see what s in your /user/home directory which relates to this. In a terminal, type|:
    Code:
    cd
    ls -la *.so*
That will list all the files with the extension 'so', which are shared library files in Linux. The chances are we will want to delete the lot, to allow Messenger to do what it wants to, but we'd better have a look at a list first.

('doping' was a typo for 'doing', and yes, doing something in a terminal means typing it in! Doping could be more fun, though ;) )
