Try to boot to USB while POST appears. Pressing F12 will give you access to boot from USB.

Have you switched on your wireless?? What settings you use for wireless connectivity: static or DHCP?? Have you got any password for Access Point security?? Can you see any network in Network Manager??

Ok My internet access is just about transparent. I can go to just abount any hotspot and connect automatically in WinXP. I did that when I set it up initially. I've long ago forgot any passwords that I used when I installed the router. I can take a ubuntu cd upstairs where the desktop and the modem are and boot from the cd there I have the internet. I guess because I don't have a wireless adapter there and it's connected directly to the modem.

This is what "Network Tools" reports:
    Network device: lo
    Hardware address: Loopback
    Multicast: Disabled
    MTU: 16436
    Link speed: not available
    State: Active
    Transmitted packets: 88
    Transmission errors: 0
    Received packets: 88
    Reception errors: 0
    Collisions: 0
    I can't find "Network Manager

This what ipconfig on windows desktop reports:
    Windows IP Configuration

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 6:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mc.at.cox.net
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
do I need to plug any of these numbers into the ubuntu

Just found: my address type is assigned by DHCP
