does anyone else find this interesting...the original HL/CS run really crappy on this little laptop (if u can get a way for it to run properly and quickly that would be great) whatever engine they use for hl doesn't like the comp or something

yet the unreal 2.0 engine (UT2003 runs good on this thing, and raven shield are 2 examples) which is more demanding on the comp runs pretty well :? :? :? anyone got idea's of how we can get the hl1 engine to run good on this thing, as im sure ALOT of people who wanted to play cs on this thing were disapointed to find it ran very badly

That's odd - Quake 2, which shares the same engine as HL1, runs quite well on my machine. Max Payne 1 also runs very well, with all settings cranked up. I'm also running Warcraft 3 w/ no issues, (used the registry mod to get it to display properly on the widescreen monitor).

I'll have to try HL1 and report back here. I can tell you that HL1 ran w/o issue on a 500Mhz Celeron tablet I have, which only has 2.5MB of video ram, and 256MB of ram...

Quake 2 engine and half life engines are completely different. As for compatability check the top post it already has alot of this info, and for warcraft 3 same thing if u want the resolution AND the aspect ratio to be proper the link in the 1st links u 2 a forum with aspect ratio hacks etc...

I would also imagine that driving a cinquecento round the Hockenheimring might not be as exciting as driving Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 car. Even though they're both Fiats, allegedly.

I installed HL1 & Opposing Force. Both run quite well. The only glitch or hiccup I've noticed is that even though I turned off the 'CD Music' option in the configuration settings, it keeps re-selecting it, and as such pauses occasionally as it's looking for the next CD track to play.

Also, sadly, I installed Guild Wars, and it's just too much for my little Aspire One to handle, (even on the lowest settings).

hl games performace are very tied to processor speed

althouth the onboard 945 runs games pretty well, the atom processor doesn't offer enough speed

I'm not sure, but I think the problem is with Open GL on the original HL and CS.... try playing using DirecX, I think it will be alot smoother. ;)

No reason for CS and HL1 to not play well, these games run good on Pentium II 450mhz as far as I can recall back in the day. I'm quite sure the Atom processor is alot more powerful, hehe. :D

Welp, I just completed HL1 on my AAO and yay!
    - I didn't remember some parts as I last played it about 8 years ago! but it has helped me realise more the the current HL story (i'm a mega HL fan) but thats a different topic

    ANYWHO...
I was running the Steam version as I have peggle and some other older 3D games on there, and they run fine on my AAO150X, dont know how to display the FPS in HL1 but I can assure you I never had any slow down, and I was even listening to music from media player as I played.
I have the Half-Life: Generation box set somewhere and dont see why the CD version would be any different. Infact i'd assume the CD version would be more 'lower spec' than the updated Steam HL1.

BTW: HL1's minimum spec consisted of a Pentium 133mhz processor... no way can 1.6GHz be not enough...

    - BAH! Some people aren't satisfied with 10fps on max settings! I know I am  I do get around 20fps with everything low but textures though...

Therefore i'm blaming all slideshow framerates on old-gen games on driver issues.

Most of the problems with the hl1 games i play (cs 1.3 and 1.6) seem to be hyperthreading.
The games seem to max out at ~40% cpu usage.

Choosing Direct3D over OpenGL gives a decent boost in FPS, using a high-fps model pack and lower texture/render
settings/config will get you an average low of 24 FPS and high 99fps (staring at a wall) wich is playable.

An example userconfig.cfg for steam based mods: extremely low settings.

Since you have your AAO...why not try GLDirect 5.0 in CS and see if it works maybe it will boost the FPS....

Tried with gldirect 5.02, for the most part it made things worse.

Most of the opengl demos i ran under gldirect also performed much worse.
A simple example.. wglgears, i usually get close to 1200fps average , with gldirect only 800fps.

It was worth a try. :ugeek:
