Very New to this need GPS program

Hi all What I'm look to do is install some GPS software on the standard linux which is on the machine. I have the following hardware USB bluetooth dongle and usb GPS receiver. I note looking on the web there is a couple of free GPS appliactions for linux, but I'm toally unsure how I go about installing these and which would be best to use. So a step by step guide whould be much apperciated. Many thanks Stew
