VGA to LCD tv

I'm having trouble hooking my netbook up to my LCD tv. I'm using my VGA cable from my desktop pc. When I try to toggle between the displays using fn f5 nothing seems to happen. My screen goes blank for a few seconds then comes back. I even tried hooking up to my desktop monitor and the same thing happens. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong any help would be great thanks Steve
