Video codecs

    Hello guys! iam looking for some help here! i just got this acer aspire one and well, i was wondering how the hell you install video codecs in order to see avi divx etc.... my lap comes with Mplayer but do not let me see avi.
    Also how can i install the amsn??? when i try to, the machine do not let me extract to files for some reason, the same thing hapends when y try to exgtract the files for the vlc! any ideas please???
