I've seen this question asked before, but have never seen a complete step-by-step answer. Perhaps you can help.

I'd like to view movies ripped from DVD's on my PC, and play them on my new Acer Aspire (160 GB HD) -- how do I do it? What ripping software do I need on my PC? What format? What player software do I need on my netbook? Any product recommendations here? Freeware?

Your step-by-step guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

these are no step by step instructions but some recommendations which I consider easy enough.

Buy nero recode, there is one option that converts main movie to nero digital (really just an mp4) you choose a profile and that's it. you could get more advanced if you wanted to

download handbrake (free), choose the dvd, choose a profile and that's it.

hope it helps. I've tried both and got good results

    Thanks.
Unfortunately latest Handbrake (0.9.3) no longer works for this, but I see that there are many similar products. What fornat do I want to convert to? (Is this what you mean by "chose a profile"?)

I found a great program is DVD FAB. You can just pop a dvd in and its simple to convert or to make backup copys. They might have a free version to try out, not sure. But with just a few clicks it starts ripping a dvd and you can just watch the smaller avi when done from your laptop. (Lots of codecs if your interested in a certain one, h264 is what I use. Looks great when outputted to a bigscreen also.) I wish I had HDMI out, but my TV takes VGA so all is well.
