It turns out that this was a BIOS issue. The XP guest booted properly in VirtualBox 3.1.4 under either Vista or Ubuntu on a different laptop, but it froze on my Acer Aspire One AO751h (Atom Z520 processor that supports VT-x) under both Vista and Xubuntu. It would boot under 'Safe Mode with Networking,' which gave me hope.

After hacking around a number of different possible causes, I turned to the BIOS. I updated the BIOS to version 3211 from 3204, and the XP guest now boots successfully.

Hope this might help someone else.
