Could someone help me out please? I've got a VIsta Ultimate DVD and a 4gb flash drive. I've managed to extract the iso and mount it using daemon tools. I tried following the guide here but my flash drive didn't appear on diskpart when I typed 'list disk' - so I tried continuing without step one, but now I keep getting 'Disk Error, Press any key to restart.'

    Thanks

EDIT: Just read this - it states that diskpart only picks up flash devices in vista and I'm using XP  I'll have to do it from the other PC tomorrow then :s

Yep, I ran into the same problem. I gave up and used a usb dvd drive. I only had access to an XP machine when I was trying to create the boot drive.

I created the bootable usb drive twice, and on both occasions the installation froze after I entered my serial key and clicked 'next'. I tried without entering a serial but had the same problem. Loading files before setup was amazingly fast though :?

Any ideas what I should do? I don't have access to any external optical drives or hard disk enclosures so the USB flash drive seems the only way to go :(

So here's a solution to everyone's problem with diskpart not picking up USB drive (from an XP machine):

I used my desktop (with XP) and booted it up with the vista install dvd, but clicked on the recover vista, instead of install vista. it'll seach your hard drive for vista installation, but won't find anything, obviously.

But it'll have a button where you can load drivers (or something of that sort - sorry but i don't remember the exact wording). And from there, it'll come up with a menu of 5 or 6 choices, one of which is to open a command prompt. From there, you will be using Vista's version of diskpart and it'll recognize the USB drive where you can follow the aformentioned guides on making a USB key bootable. Once that's done, exit out of the vista install, reboot back into XP and copy the files to the USB key.

    Hope this is remotely helpful.

Which drivers are people using for the touchpad? I got vista drivers from the synaptics website, but I no longer seem to have the pinch zoom feature present when I was running XP.

In the end I installed a vista home premium version that I downloaded off the internet - It was small enough to fit on my usb stick and I've got a genuine product key to use with it (got it with my other PC). However, this was probably vlited or something as it had a few things disabled that I have had to enable manually. I used the drivers recommended by most people on this forum, but can't seem to get a working webcam driver. Any ideas?

Also, the windows experience index seems to have been disabled somehow as I keep being told that I cancelled the refresh whenever I try to get an index score - so aero/windows flip get disabled. I've used a registry tweak to get aero back, but I can't get a base score!

@bbkarn - I'm using the standard touchpad driver that was installed with vista/windows update. To zoom in/out while web browsing I just hold down the control button and then scroll up/down (by applying pressure on the right-hand-side) - I didn't even know about the pinch zoom stuff

How to prep your USB flash drive with a Vista boot sector from XP

    http://aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2638#p20822

If you think it's complicated, you're mistaken - the boot sector can be done in a single command line.

As for Vista's performance on the AA1, it's very good. Aero works flawlessly, and the proper intel graphics drivers do wonders.
FYI: My scores are 3.0, 4.5, 4.2, 2.8, 5.2 (was a bit higher but I decided to give Ubuntu more room to roam.)
