    Hi
Firstly I would just like to say that I couldn't find a post like this anywhere so I made a new post. Sorry if there is already a post like this.

My problem occurs every time that I open the VLC media player. Every time I run it I get the error "Unable to open '%U' "

What is this? Why do I get it? and what can I do to fix it?

    Thanks

    Mrjpsycho

The .desktop file for vlc probably contains an exec=vlc %U , which simply signifies a switch that can be used to load the file you're right-clicking on into vlc. Since you're opening vlc directly, it isn't being fed a filename of the file you wish to view in vlc. Anyway, not having vlc installed here, that would be my guess.

You can try right-clicking on a file you want loaded into vlc and then do an "Open with vlc" to see whether that works correctly.

    Cheers.

Yes I have tried to do this and it doesn't bring up the error.

    HI!

I'm sorry for my english but i'm french.

I've resolved this problem this evening
    In french:
    Aller dans le terminal
    taper: su -
    taper: mousepad /usr/share/applications/livna-vlc.desktop
mousepad s’ouvre avec la fameuse bande rouge comme dit ci-dessus

Enfin enlever au niveau de Exec=vlc %U le “%U”
    Sauvegarder et relancer la machine.

Its good for for VLC GIMP and i think for all the same problem :D

    open a terminal and enter
    Code:
    sudo mousepad /usr/share/applications/livna-vlc.desktop

on the line that says "exec= vlc %u" simply delete the %u and reboot. Its not necessary.
