    Re: VLC won't play avi...

Was this the VLC from Acers website? As I couldn't get it to play AVIs either, I had to get it from Fedoras repositorys. Which if you type in a terminal

    sudo yum install fedora-release

and then do a seach for VLC in the add / remove software should I think get it working

    Hope that helps

I already tried that. I just removed and re-installed again via the package manager but it listed the same version and package and still doesn't work. It plays all other formats but with avi's it stiks up a msg saying unable to open path/filename...

As an alternative you could use ffplay, that's what I've been using to play avi files. Just install ffmpeg and ffplay will install with it.

This tells us nothing. avi is a container format and can contain any codecs. You need to tell us which video and audio codecs are used in the file or point us to a sample before we can help you.

It's run from the CLI. But what you can do is right click on the avi you want to play and select "open with other application" then "use a custom command" and type ffplay. Then make sure the "use as default" box is checked. From then on just double click any avi and you're good to go.

P.S. type "f" to go full screen
