I'd like to be able to connect to the interwebs via my VZW broadband card. It's a USB modem, and while not "officially" supported with Linux, I know there has to be someone here on the forums that knows how to get one of these to work. I've got most of the Fedora Core 8 stuff in my Linpus distro, but don't have kppp, or gnome-ppp. Can someone help me figure out what I need to do to make this sumonabeach work? Thanks in advance.

A first step is to know what exactly is the device.
    You can use the command

    lsusb

    for this in a terminal ( use alt-F2 ).

Do this before and after inserting the device and look for the line that has changed.

    Post that line. --Japser.

Edit: I overlooked the details in the title of your post, but anyway, it is a good exercise.

It appears that you need the cdc-acm module for this thing.
    You can find it here:http://www.gnucoop.com/wiki/doku.php/aceraspireone

After that, I think it will need a command like

    sudo modprobe cdc-acm

That should create a /dev/ttyACM0 that makes the modem accessible for software like wvdial or gnome-ppp or mobile partner or whatever.

BTW, note the number, it is a UM175 ...

Thanks, Jasper. I got so frustrated that I just installed xubuntu. Going to try with that, but the cdc-acm module idea, if it still needs it, is awesome. Be good to take this on a road trip!

As I looked over my previous post, I realized that my lysdexia kicked in again- it's a UM175 modem, and I'm using it on my One right now! After installing xubuntu, it was a simple matter of running gnome-ppp. I entered the GUI, put in the pertinent details (modem , interface, phone number, password, etc.) and it worked. D/L speeds are tad slow, but it's likely the area I'm in. Thanks for all the help, Jasper!
