So the linux "factory defualt" wallpaper has it's use with the little search tab in the upper right. I decided to make a little one of my own integrating it but darking things up a little. Here's a screen shot:

Another solution is to switch to another workspace/desktop. It only shows on the first one..

Still if anybody knows how to stop this search thing...

    EDIT

    /usr/bin/acer-search-desktop

I'd like to see if I can change the search to a "google" search and maybe add a button to search wikipedia.... Anyone have any idea how to change that stuff? Also, is there any way to easily access newly downloaded applications? I was able to add skype in the Connect area based on suggestions in other posts, but I think that was in part due to the fact that the skype icon was already there and whatnot...

Just replicate what is already in there by typing the shortcut to your newly downloaded application. I have done this for Bittorrent and it worked a treat.

elpresidente, how did you take that screenshot? For some reason Print Screen doesn't seem to work in Linpus.

Edit: I found a screenshot program in /usr/share/applications called "take screenshot"

Check your "picture" folder..on mine it brings up an option after I hit the PrtSc button. Do you have the advanced features unlocked? If not that is most likely your problem. Here's another screenshot of what comes up:

Just rename it to acer-search-desktop.bak and it will not start automatically.
I have changed my desktop (see attachment), but I need to open the desktop settings every reboot to make it active.. Anybody having the same problem?

can't simply rename the file acer-search-desktop ... it's locked down... even tried using the terminal w/ root access. :( I'd like to get rid of, though.

You can change any filename with root access. You should kill the process before trying to rename it though.

I was able to get through that darn acer-search-desktop file and can now use the search bar with google on ff3.

attached is the semi revised acer-search-desktop file. just make sure you follow these steps as i cannot guarantee that it will work on your setup since i havent fully configured/tested the file yet (need to sleep.. :D). it's for en_US only at the moment but you can try it for yourself. (use at your own risk)

    ROOT only.

    1. install firefox3 (firefox3.real) search through this forum on how to get one.. sorry. i forgot where i got it.
    2. go to /usr/bin/
    3. rename the firefox(acer version) to firefox2(or whatever name).
    4. rename the firefox3.real to firefox (kind of making it default)
    5. edit the firefox with the content on the firefox file i've attached(it's a text file). you can overwrite it though check if the directories in the file are correct.
    6. save.
    7. still on the /usr/bin/ folder, copy and paste the acer-search-desktop file from here. MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR OLD ONE JUST IN CASE. :)
    8. reboot, (or killall then refresh the x window)
    9. you'll know it's working when you see the google! name at the top.

i've also attached the out-of-the-box start-search_bar.sh from /usr/share/search-bar (for people who had mistakes like me.:) )

if you do not want to make the bar show up, i suggest you edit the start-search_bar.sh (/usr/share/search-bar/) and comment everything on it (put # sign at the beginning of every line).
this won't load the search bar at all or even try to look for it.

renaming it to something else feels a little wrong as the system would still look for a missing file. just a suggestion. :)

    Or alternatively you could just:

    1: right click
2: select add/remove software (you can find it I'm sure)
    3: select the "list" tab
    4: select "installed packages"
5: find the acer search bar and get to it!!
6: you know, select it with your mouse and then click the apply button.
VIOLA! search bar gone.... after a reboot of course.

Mine has been gone for several days now.

The "PrtSc" button does work on my Linpus, I just push the button (the shift key is not required).

You can temporarily get rid of the search bar by manually killing the process (mentioned earlier) this is how.

    Open terminal.
    Type ps -a

The following sort of stuff will appear:

    [user@localhost ~]$ ps -a
    PID TTY TIME CMD
    657 tty1 00:00:00 sh
    737 tty1 00:00:00 dbus-launch
    741 tty1 00:00:00 gnome-keyring-d
    743 tty1 00:00:00 xfce4-session
    757 tty1 00:00:09 xfdesktop2
    1611 tty1 00:00:02 xfwm4
    1643 tty1 00:00:08 xfce4-panel
    1645 tty1 00:00:00 start-search_ba
    1652 tty1 00:00:00 acer-search-des
    1653 tty1 00:00:02 xfce4-xkb-plugi
    1654 tty1 00:00:32 xfce4-mixer-plu
    1700 tty1 00:00:01 scim-bridge
    2308 tty1 00:00:01 Thunar
    30166 pts/0 00:00:00 ps

Look for "acer-search-des" look at the process ID number (to the left on the same line)
In this case the number is 1652 (your number may differ.

    Now type kill 1652

The search bar will be gone until reboot.
