want to hook up to canon pixma printer

I am between dwellings and want to temporarily hook my ACER netbook to the printer for my (unconnected) desktop. (I will not be hooking up my desktop at all until I arrive at my new home.) I have ordered an external disk reader so I can download software/driver for the printer. Is there anything else I will need to know before trying to plug in the printer to my ACER ASPIRE ONE? :?: Thanks.
