    hi there!

today the 14th of may 2009 i signed in on this forum and i like to introduce myself.

december 2008 i bought a AA1 with linpus because i was eager to learn about the power of open source and fed up with M$-ware. for testing Linux i installed Fedora 10 on my day to day laptop and i was astonished! switching from mac OS 8.5 to widdows three years ago was terrible but i needed the lot for my work -- remote access (ie working at home instead of going to office, some advantage of working for the Dept of Transport fighting congestion) means i had to sacrifice something. besides the mac os 10 i think is horrible and has nothing to do with the user friendlyness Steve Jobs invented and the things i knew from back-ol' system 6.0.7 on my Mac Classic and 8.5 on the heavy 1999 powerbook...

the world of Linux is amazing! after trying openSuse and Ubuntu i chose Fedora 10 to be favorite. not everything works directly, but hey, does xp?

the AA1 came part of my job where i can buy a computer under 1000 euros every three years and get about half payed. the AA1 is great when travelling by train and bus and do something i used to get payed for -- amazing how many people still carry their phonebook-sized laptops...

i like visiting this forum and hope to help out some people and learn about the AA1.

most interesting for me is further optimizing the AA1 on the OS side. recently i discovered about Moblin (http://moblin.org) and their aim to get netbooks operable in less than 5 seconds, Linux based. GREAT! Linpus that came with my AA1 is rather fast but somehow i want more, or in fact less. less software weight and therefore more speed and foremost better fit my own favours...

    bye, Meine

Hi everyone, I have an AAO also, the 120GB variety (I still don't know how people can live with only 16GB of hard drive space in this day and age, even with Google's ChromeOS on the horizon). I got my AAO upgraded to 2GB of RAM for free on purchase, with the judicious use of a competitor's advert showing a 2GB BenQ netbook for the same price. :p Mine came with Windows XP preinstalled, which I have now replaced with Windows 7. I joined this forum as I am intending to upgrade my AAO to Ubuntu v9.10 soon, and I wanted to have good community support to assist with any driver issues I may encounter. I'm also on the Ubuntu forums, to get assistance from the experts there as well.

I use my AAO at University, where I am studying towards a Master of Forensic IT. When it is at home, I have my AAO plugged into an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and it has therefore become my main machine. It joins my wife's clunkier Compaq Presario laptop and other assorted desktop machines scattered around our home which are mostly connected to my home WiFi network.

I'm a geek at heart, and will no doubt take great interest in the forums here about mods, upgrades, and finding other uses for my AAO. Back in the 1980's, I had an Atari 800XL machine which I hacked, to control my home electric appliances (via a veroboard with relays etc, connected to the joystick ports and keyboard LEDs). I'm sure my new AAO could be turned to something similar these days.
