From what I've read, Windows 7 Starter will be a stripped-down version of Windows without the Aero theme. It will be available pre-installed on netbooks, but it won't be sold as a standalone product, at least not in the U.S. -- it may be available in the so-called developing-countries market.

Correct, this is sort of a "light" version of Windows 7 that's designed to be cheap, and to be used on low-performance computers. There were some strange restrictions built into it during development, one being that you could only run 3 apps at a time, but a lot of that was changed before RTM.

I think I might try Starter on my AOD250 to see how it compares with Home Premium. Starter's lightweight design might be a nice fit for our netbooks.

I don't know why anybody would want the "Starter Edition" anyway, it seems quite crippled, just go for Home Basic.

Its not as crippled as it seems -- that graphic that's posted above is outdated. Some of that has changed.

Depending on what you use your netbook for, "Starter" could be an excellent option. There's going to be significantly less "OS" overhead, especially on the graphics subsystem, which should result in better overall performance and battery life. A lot of us want to push the limits of our netbooks and show how they can do almost everything a normal laptop can do, but there's also that group of people who just want a lean and mean ultra-portable computer. "Starter" might fit that segment perfectly.

I'm going to setup a dual-boot on my AOD250 and load it up. I'll post a thread here with my findings.

I just installed the home premium version on my 751h. It runs fine, even with aero.

Did you do it from a DVD? Also, is it the only OS on the 751h and did you have to add/find any drivers to complete the installation?

I dowloaded Win7 from the MS website and started the install from XP in a seperate partition.

I worked like a charm immediately. In order to get the touchpad gestures working I installed a driver. Thats all.

Today or tomorrow I am going to get rid of that XP partition.
