I went for a slim drive off ebay. It has a LG GSA 4082 in a USB case. Came with two different USB cables, one the regular USB A to B, a short one, a power cable to tap the 5 Volts from a PS2 port to a power connector on the case and an AC adapter to run without loading down the AAO. I got all that for $55 shipped from Hong Kong. So far it has worked like a champ, but true, it isn't a Lightscribe drive but it's supposed to do up to DVD DL discs. Haven't tried that yet! So far it's supported on my Windows and Linux systems. :D JohnP

Score. I got one of the 4082 externals from ebay as well, got mine for 48 bucks though... mine doesn't have a ps/2 power cable.. just a usb A/B and a usb to DC. Seems to read just fine from one cable but needs both to burn. cool toy though.

This is what I use with my XP One. Works with just one of the two USB cables. Haven't tried any movies with it, though.

I don't need a slim drive to carry around with me so I went the cheap option. This drive rests on my AV rack. Works great:

It is connected via USB with this. Just connect the SATA connector to the drive, with the power plug into the adapter:

No drivers need. I reflashed the firmware of the drive to v1.01 and removed region protection to rpc1 using the following great tool:

Lastly I use Nero Lite which is a stripped down version of the full Nero suite ideally suited for netbooks:

    Good luck!

For my LG slim drive, I use the Tom Bihn padded case made for the MBA Superdrive. The LG just fits in sideways and I have another little pouch clipped onto it with the USB cords. Works well for me, but I'd suggest measuring and measuring again since the TB case is specifically for the Apple MBA Superdrive.

I took a different aproch, I bought a external slim drive enclosure off E-Bay for $19.00 free shipping, then I robbed the combo drive out of a old laptop somebody gave me and installed it in the enclosure. Now I have a slim CD-RW/DVD Rom drive that runs fine off the USB port. I wasn't worried about burning DVD's from my AA1 as I would use my Mac to do that anyway.

I have the white AAO so I got a white slim drive off ebay. It is ROM only but I can't ever see why I would want to burn with the AAO. I have lots of desktops and laptops for that. It has two usb cables but so far I have never had to use more than one and get all the power I need with no lag at all. Great for loading software and DVD's play great. Actually with the WinDVD software and tweaking the audio, it sounds pretty decent with great separation. Drive cost about $45 shipped from NY computer shop.

Check on eBay. Slim, external optical drives are selling from $26 for a basic CD ROM to $100, usually less (around $85) for a full blown CD/DVD read write w/litescribe burner. A lot include free shipping. Don't get anxious....check all the listings for the best price. I paid $37.50 for my SLIM external DVD ROM/CD R/RW burner wiith $6 shipping. It works great! I played DVD movies with no trouble and accessed data from my backup CD's without a hitch. Mine came with two cables, so if it doesn't have enough juice to run it during a "burn" you can plug in the additional cable for more juice. Good luck!

MParker, I have been considering purchasing the LG GP08LU10 to primarily rip my CD Library to digital format, are you running the Linpus Lite, and if so was the device simply plug and play or was there any workarounds needed? Also do you know which linux program would work best best to rip cds quickly with this external optical disk drive?

    Cheers,

I'm using the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. Not portable but works a treat. Paid about £20 for it.
