I picked up a Panasonic VW-BN1 External DVD Burner from Black's in Toronto yesterday with a clearance price of 29.99 + tax. It does require external power supply. It can record in DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW and DL discs in 6x. When you use the device with Panasonic HDC-SD5 and HDC-SD7 camcorders, you can save all the video recorded directly without a PC but just pressing a button.

Burner can be USB 2.0 connected to my AAO running Windows XP Home. Behaves like a regular external DVD drive. Play CD/DVD fine. Perfect for loading software from CD/DVD media. It requires AC power so its is not as mobile as other USB power drives that other has mentioned. I don't have a need to travel with this burner constantly and when I need to use it, its just a single USB connection from the drive to my AAO, not a big deal. Will test burn some disks soon, but I use it mainly as a reader instead of a recorder. I prefer to burn cd/dvd using my desktop which is more powerful than the AAO.

Burner was retail for $139.99 before the unit got put out for clearance. This one is a good deal if you can still find them available from Blacks.

I just got my AOA a few days ago and bought a Rosewill ROD-EX001 at the same time (got the netbook from buy.com and the DVD drive from Newegg). The Rosewill is based on the TEAC DV-W28S-R slimline drive - $60 with free shipping a week or so ago. Seems to work fine -- I haven't burned anything with it yet, but it plays DVD movies without a hitch using Media Player and only requires one USB connection for power on the Aspire One.

    Hi geep,
Interested to know the outcome of your question...
I too need a DVD RW LS that will work with the Aspire One running Linpus Lite.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Thanks!

    hi guys,
I see some of you use the xbox 360 HD DVD drive as an external, which makes this a stupid question, does the Xbox HD DVD drives play normal DVDs on the Linpus AAO ?

i have both a toshiba slim hd dvd drive and a panasonic slim blu ray drive, both in usb cases bought off ebay. Bother were originally bought for use in my laptop and custom pc case, but i randomly grab one for use with my aao.

both have worked on my d250 with only a single usb cable for both disc reads and writes.

i also used my xbox hd dvd drive to install windows 7 with no problem at all.

I have the LG slim GP08LU10 too. Can do anything I need to do on a CD/DVD reader/player/burner. Very nice drive IMO.

    Hi,
    I have a Asus USB2 Powered 8x DVD external burner. Model SDRW-08D1S-U
It's about the size of a CD case and I use it laying flat instead of with the vertical stand. Burns all types of CD's & DVD's. (All formats & DL) It does NOT have Lightscribe though. Uses two USB ports and comes with Y-cable. Only one(1) USB port is needed to read only.
This burner is rated at 4 1/2 stars out of 5 for reviews on Amazon with almost all reviewers satisified with this burner.
No power supply is needed and it is very compact and will fit in most netbook skins or bags along with the computer.
    Good Luck :)
