Thanks for the answers ;) I'm running 9.04 on my A150, and i've stripped it down quite a bit after removing ALOT of bloatware. So i'm running very lite now. I'll check out sickboy's kernel later today, and report back here :)

I installed Sickboy's kernel now, and now it takes 36sec from power-on to the login. But i noticed that while it's quite fast now from power-on to login, it's slow from login to the desktop. Ant ideas why? I'm not using Compiz or anything like that. I've disabled alot of things on startup.

Straight Kuki 1.6 install. I leave firefox open when I shutdown and XFCE automatically opens it to where it was. I do tell the XFCE power manager to use maximum performance when on AC. A lot of time is spent/lost negotiating the wireless connection with your router. wep is faster than wpa which is faster than wpa2, however that list is least secure to most. ssd boots faster than hd, too.

Well, I'm using automatic login and boot time to full desktop and wifi is now 34,5sec.... But I experience something similar to you as after some more seconds I've a lot of disk activity and system becomes really (REALLY) slow until about 1min20sec, after which it behaves very well again (light and fast). Any ideas?

PS: would anyone wants to know the tweaks each of us did?

Yeah, it's strange. But i've noticed something annoying with Sickboy's kernel. It looks like the whole system lags, and it's very(!) annoying when i'm listening to music. So now, i'm booting back into the stock Ubuntu-kernel.

If you are having longer than expected boot times and are running xfce 4.6, make sure the xfce settings helper app is not running. It adds about six to eight seconds between login and desktop appearance. If running gnome or unr, you still have a lot of services running that you may or may not be using (cups, bluetooth, etc.).

You know readahead is used by ubuntu by default right? :D try booting once with "profile" added to the grub command line to regenerate the boot profile to see if it helps successive boots.

    edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

    Code:
    gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
    add
    # defoptions=quiet
    word "profile" (without quotes)

    then update grub

    Code:
    sudo update-grub
For the first time, it can be slow, because it makes the profile that time.
you do this once time, when you boot your computer next time you can remove that "profile" word and update your grub

I also posted on the Ubuntu forums here:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1139546

My dmesg shows an unknown USB device... not sure if I left my usb key in when I booted up.. I presume everything USB related should work ??

    Thanks

Looks like windows isnt far behind linux now, and my machine has 1.5 gig ram and a 60 gig hdd in it
