    148MB! What? :p

My time now is 45sec. Much better that the 1min 20sec i had with Ubuntu 8.10! But i guess i can take some seconds of my current time if i disable Compiz, Emerald and Conky.

Any ideas on my issue ??

Grub loads very fast.. Selecting Ubuntu 9.04 I get starting up and then a pause then it loads to the login screen.

Once I've logged in it takes another 20 seconds to get to the desktop... and be usable.

    help :?

    Thanks :)

How about patching your bootchartd init script to keep running even after everything ready?
Put a sleep 300 in to keep it running and monitoring access cause the time from grub till end of init is the least time consuming part about booting.

Just a hint, to make this thread a bit less ubuntu... ;)

just install pybootchartgui and bootchart, if you dont specify pybootchartgui it'll install the java graph maker instead which needs to install all of java too if you dont have it for some reason :D
It's recommends are bootchart-java OR pybootchartgui
in ubuntu there isnt any patching needed to keep the chart running post gdm start, just edit the init.d script to use nostop and you can run sudo /etc/init.d/stop-bootchart start after it finishes loading to see the time. or call it from a script that runs that somewhere farther in the boot process. I havent used it in awhile but I think you can even add nostop on the grub command line somewhere, like profile=nostop or something.

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BootCharting?ac ... +64bit.jpg
theres an example of whats possible on ubuntu with a fast ssd :)

Tomt, how long does it take from boot to desktop and internet connection? It sounds like your boot time might be similar to mine (50 seconds) and I guess at the moment nothing can be done about it since we have newer models and a kernel dedicated to those models haven't been created yet.

Once I've logged in it takes about 15 - 20 seconds to get a usable desktop..
I'll time the time from grub to Login.

I've upgraded to the 2.6.30-2-generic kernel and that does seem a little better :)

20 sec is not really slow..

you can try make it faster ect.
    +remove spash screen
    +enable/disable some of the services (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89491 , http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1 ... 393,00.asp)
+remove ipv6 (if you dont need that)
    +remove useless programs
+remove useless virtual consoles (you must have lest two) so you can edit ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-6]" to ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-2]"
    +aliasing hostname to localhost
    +profile grub

if you wanna know someting those i can write quides those

    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/default/console-setup
    edit ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-6]" to ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-2]"

then go /etc/event.d/ and edit init-files, those what you dont need. exple if you put that ACTIVE_CONSOLES="/dev/tty[1-2]" you can edit tty3, tty4, tty5, tty6

    Code:
    cd /etc/event.d/
    gksudo gedit tty3
add every line starts #, except stop-lines.. it should looks like this

    # tty3 - getty
    #
    # This service maintains a getty on tty3 from the point the system is
    # started until it is shut down again.

    #start on runlevel 2
    #start on runlevel 3

    stop on runlevel 0
    stop on runlevel 1
    stop on runlevel 4
    stop on runlevel 5
    stop on runlevel 6

    #respawn
    #exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty3

make that every tty what you dont need, but leave at least two tty left :)

PS. sorry my bad english :D

just add "#" every line it should look like this
    Code:
    cd /etc/event.d/
    Code:
    gksudo gedit tty3
    # tty3 - getty
    #
    # This service maintains a getty on tty3 from the point the system is
    # started until it is shut down again.

    #start on runlevel 2
    #start on runlevel 3

    stop on runlevel 0
    stop on runlevel 1
    stop on runlevel 4
    stop on runlevel 5
    stop on runlevel 6

    #respawn
    #exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty3

then do that same tty4, tty5 and tty6

    Code:
    gksudo gedit tty4
    example what it should look

    # tty4 - getty
    #
    # This service maintains a getty on tty4 from the point the system is
    # started until it is shut down again.

    #start on runlevel 2
    #start on runlevel 3

    stop on runlevel 0
    stop on runlevel 1
    stop on runlevel 4
    stop on runlevel 5
    stop on runlevel 6

    #respawn
    #exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty4

and same like to tty5 and tty6..

    understand? :)

I just put in 1.5gb of ram and a Samsung SLC SSD thinking my boot times would improve lol. They did but not by much and I went from XP home to XP Pro. It takes about 45-50 seconds to boot to complete OS (WIFI handshake and complete desktop). Oddly enough it take 5 seconds to shut down from the time I hit the shutdown to complete off LMAO. So, that cool anyway

You guys need to be more specific on where you consider your boot times ;)
