    Hiya all - great forum!

I want to change my SSD for a 5mm HDD as tnkgrl has, but cant seem to pin down which HDD's to use. Has anyone got any model numbers or links to suppliers here in the UK? I'd like to go for something 60Gb or more, dont really need anything more than 120Gb tho.

    Ta :)

    Mike.

while youre talking about it...i cant understand one thing...with 5mm hdd do you have to sand down the knob? or just with 8mm?
i have read some posts saying yes..but in tnkgrl doesnt say anything about it....

theres two by the look of it in the video, one is a threaded post which is left (uses some of those square adhesive pads to protect the hdd) and there is an L shaped plastic post which is snapped off in the video, and he's using a 5mm HDD so I expect to have to do the same.

Use the same Samsung drive that tnkgirl was using. She had a link to it in her post. I bought the model myself on ebay.
It is a 5mm 60GB drive that easily slots in between the motherboard and the chassi without any modifications.
I fixed it to the mother board with some double sided tape.
You need to sand down the existing flat cable a little bit to fit it into the drive.
The harddrive itself is very quiet and highly recommended.

The L knob has to be broken off on all to have it fit smoothly.
They can all be fitted w/o modification to the case, if you have a Long Zif Cable.
If you don't and use the OEM ZIF cable you have to mod the L Knob for 5mm.
The 8mm you have to modify the Center knob where tankgrl placed the padding.
i just went ahead and removed the middle knob completly b/c i am using a 8mm and i want a 1mm clearance between the mobo and HD rather than the HD be on the Mobo =D

    MK1011GAH is a Toshiba 8mm 100GB
    HS080HB is a Samsun 80GB 5mm

Thats the two i have. =D

The Samsung or Toshiba Single Platter HDD,which are 5mm are easiest to get ur hands on.
Double Platter are 8mm and tend to have more than 100/120GB.
I find it hard to get a Hitachi HDD.

    There is this thread viewtopic.php?f=43&t=1154

The ones reported to be used and working are there (Note on the thread there are some that didnt work)
    MK1011GAH - 8mm
    MK1214GAH - 8mm
    MK8009GAH
    MK3008GAL
    MK300GAL
    MK600GAL
    HS080HB
    HTC426020G5CE00 - Flip Cable
    Hitachi - C4K60 - Flip Cable

wow some real good info there thanks :)

Seems eBay is the main UK source of these 5mm drives! I may go for a cheaper but higher capacity 8mm drive and see how it fits. I'm a little confused tho about whether the Acer ZIF cables can or cant be used on which drives!

I know for fact that the Samsung and Toshiba i Listed are able to use the Origianl ZIF connector from Acer One.
The 2 things you need to do, to the conector to make it work is:

    1. Sand the blue part down on the HDD end to make it about 50% Thinner, so it fit into the Samsung and Toshiba HDD
    2. You have to refold it, so it is facing the right way up or down.

Now Hitachi ones, i am not sure but another user has reported that you need a flip cable of some sort else you Fry the HDD.
I know the Samsung Or Toshiba it will just not work if its not the right way up or down. Correct it and it runs fine w/o Frying.
