    Hi all,

just got my AAO today and am already disliking this whole Linpus thing.

I've used Linux in the past so have a basic knowledge of it and my other computer is a MacBook so not looking to go to windows at all.

So, my question is... Which Linux distro would you reconmmed for a user like me? I want something that will have athe features of the AAO working easily and quickly but is also good for someone wanting to build their Linux knowledge. I'm not an advanced user by any means but would like to have a play and learn more.

    Any input much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Hmm, thats a good thread but I was looking more for recommendations for myself given how much I have/haven't used Linux in the past. Didn't know if there was an obvious answer that just jumps out?!

As mentioned in the other thread, I think that the best option currently is to stick with Linpus as the base distribution, decide what set of changes you want to make and then tweak as necessary.

That's what I've done. I wouldn't mind loading another distro, but then the SD card function where it merges with the SSD would break.

You could always install some distros on a USB live disk and try them out to see what you like.

The more I think about, the more I want to make a backup of system as it is now, wipe it, and install a different distro. The acer desktop IS pretty limiting.

I'm sure it can be set up in other distro's - though I would have to look into the exact how.
As an alternative, you could just mount the expansion card as /home/Documents or something like that.
That way all system files are on the One, all your personal files on the SD.

The french "guru" nicknamed Petaramesh has compiled a very efficient kernel based on KUbuntu, which runs perfectly on Aspire One.
You only need to download first KUbuntu 8.04.1 and install it ( the best way is to use a USB DVD writer). Choose ext2 to format your 8 Go SSD.
KUbuntu installation works like a charm, except for wifi. Afterwards, you can download Petaramesh kernel as explained (in French) here:

    http://petaramesh.org/post/2008/09/01/N ... Aspire-One

Everything runs then perfectly and you can use all the Ubuntu distro packages.

Sorry for my poor English, hope this helps
