What do you mean by "latest version of linux" ?
Do you mean Linpus ? There is a newer version for Linpus than the ones we get with the current 8.9" one ?

£300 for the new 10.1 inch screen model is a bit steep for a netbook.

After using Linpus Linux for 4 months and now Fedora 10, I don't think I want to go back to Windows again -- only on my desktop machine ;)

Why? Because it's better to have a free copy of windows xp (it's substized by the bloatware acer preinstalled) than a copy of linux which is free in the first place. You get ripped off for buying a linux preinstalled AAO. It's about the same price, yet it's worth less compared to windows xp based AAO.

So AAo with windows is a win win win situation.
Microsoft wins for selling more license
Acer wins for selling more AAO (windows are more popular than linux as of right now)
Consumer wins for getting free windows xp license

Not when I'm shopping for a linux laptop! It saves me time from having to install what I want!

Time isn't measured in $$$. So "it saves me time from having to install what I want" doesn't really suggest linux laptop worth more $$$.

The price of linux and windows xp nettop are bascially the same. You might as well get a copy of legit windows xp license for free.

The linux versions are not as "successful" as the XP versions strictly because the majority of people who own an Acer Aspire One are not computer inclined people who would either need to know or care about linux. In comparison, XP will always have more sales than Linux because of the strict numbers of people who can use windows vs. people who can use linux. It has nothing to do with licensing, getting moneys worth, or anything else.

Please don't assume XP is somehow a better deal for the AAO because it sells more - it's an incredibly ignorant view. The same type of view that says Windows is better because Microsoft makes money off their OS.

Having said that, I have heard surprisingly good reviews from the windows versions. Windows is known to not be very stable (although XP is their most stable OS since 98), and with the hardware in the AAO I had expected poor results for alot of people. Kudos to Acer on this one.

    All the linux Acer Aspire one models I've seen for sale, are cheaper by $20-$50 USD;
however, it isn't the same hardware configuration so it isn't a true apples to apples comparison.

All the models I've seen that come pre-installed with Linux have half the memory and a small SD drive vs
    a 120gb-160gb hard drive.

To me it seems like a pretty good value to get the XP version for $20-$50 USD more
especially if you want/need the extra memory and hard drive space.
For that extra money you get
    .5gb more RAM
    120-160gb hard disk
    XP license.

Even if you don't want to ever use the XP license, it would be
difficult to purchase the hard drive and memory for the additional cost of the XP version.
