Well updated xp's drivers listed here and I get about 1.5MB sec to the one and 1.9MB sec from the one to another computer with windows filesharing. Does this seem about right? it seems god awful slow to me.

At 3am in the morning, i get above 25Mbit/s through wired lan. My $0.99 tew-432brp trendnet router is a major limiting factor to the throughput.

For computer-> computer transfer, i get about the same result as you. 1.75MB/s transfer for both directions.
Since 1.75MB = 14Mbit/s. You throughput for both ways combined is 28Mbit/s.

What brand and model of router do you have?

I have a Linksys WRT54GS and it will go as fast as the ISP's congestion will allow (WiFi connection) I see up to 15MBs.

You might want to try http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
Go to the bottom of the page and click on the start button. You need to have java installed.
