Has anyone tried this? It seems undemanding on the old PC I've just put it on and not significantly more hampered than XP. Could it be done with the same USB pendrive method as XP, or is the software for that specifically asking for XP files?

I've just put an IDE hard drive in one of those USB enclosures. Could it otherwise be loaded from there (I imagine I'd have to wipe it again so there's nothing else on there to confuse the netbook during boot-up, or maybe just make sure there are no other .iso files, as I seem to remember a cover DVD from a magazine being able to boot Ubuntu even though there was other stuff on there.

I just thought battery life and smoothness might be improved, without me having to up my RAM from 512 mb. I really don't fancy the risky job I've read up on.

    Thanks in advance.

I had Win2k installed for a short period of time. I used external CD-ROM during installation so I had no problems with anything. Just normal installation like for any PC. No problems with drivers so everything was working fine. Overall performance was OK. What else - actually is worth trying :)

Did the XP drivers work/were all the drivers otherwise covered for Windows 2000 compatibility? Having seen it look and act professional with XP I wouldn't go back to the semi-functional feeling as with Ubnutu 9.04 again.

My external DVD drive doesn't work with my Acer until Windows is booted, which has meant any installations have needed the pendrive. I'll look for a hardware list here to find DVD drives that work.

Did not had any problems with XP drivers. Part of hardware been detected automagically w/o external drivers...

Don't know your experiences with Ubuntu but just to let you know - again - never had any problems with Ubuntu. I use 9.10 ATM and I'm very happy with this distro - everything works out of the box. External DVD writers as well.... I use some no-name one.

XP home SP3 is a much faster OS than Win2k. I remembered having a Pentium II laptop years back and the upgrade from Win2K to XP was really worth it.
