    Hi,

I was thinking of buying a Aspire One. Unfortunately the XP versions are a bit pricey for me, but I MUST have Windows on the beasty if I buy one (I've tried get away with Linux on other machines, but it's just a bit too painful with hardware compatibility and the like, not to mention I need to run Winamp :D). But luckily I do own a copy of Windows 2000 Pro, SP4 and an external DVD-Rom drive (I don't want to fork out for XP).

I also know a guy who owns a Eee pc, and he's installed Win2k Pro on it, no problems, and he says it's perfect for it, as it runs most stuff and has less bloat than XP. So I figure 2000 will also be ideal for the AA1, as it's a similar specced machine.

So the question is, is Windows 2000 Pro SP4 as easy to install on a Aspire One as it is on an Eee? Has anyone done it without problems? And do all the hardware drivers work without problems?

    Thanks in advance

P.S. The AA1 I wish to buy in the cheapest version with the 8gb SSD.

best not to install Windows 2000 because of the Hyper-Threading, unless if you can disable it...

Less bloat than XP? That's a new one... especially in today's Vista-oriented world... lol

I think the biggest problem you'd have is finding drivers that work on Windows 2000. I haven't checked all the OEM drivers for the AA1, but there's a good chance that at least one of them won't have Win2K drivers in the package.

With the recent price drop, the 120GB XP version is only $20 more than the 8GB SSD Linux version (at least here in the states).

I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of trying to get Win2K running on it just to save $20, but maybe that's just me...

Hmmm, "Vista-oriented world," isn't it the OS that nobody wants to use, but is getting foisted on us by MS? :D

To be honest I'm rather surprised at the the enthusiasm to install Vista on the forum, considering it's reputation for bloat, hardware demands and compatibility issues. I think even MS recommend a fast dual core processor and 2gig of ram. I don't get why people want to stick it on the AA1. Acer (or any other Netbook maker) certainly don't seem to want to. :D

Yeah, I see your point after reading Wikipedia on Hyper-Threading. "For example, even though Windows 2000 supports multiple CPUs, Intel does not recommend that hyper-threading be enabled under that operating system."

Any idea what the side effects might be, just a bit of a performance hit?
