Has anyone successfully used Windows 7's voice recognition on an Acer D150 netbook?

So far I can't get the built-in mic to work. It seems to be extremely crappy, failing to pick up my voice until my mouth is inches away.

I have the record volume and gain turned up as far as possible. Is the built-in microphone simply useless, or have you found a way to get it to work?

Using Windows voice recognition on this netbook would be nice. I have a friend who is physically unable to use mice & keyboards very much, so voice recognition is pretty much the only way for her to use the computer.
