I believe you need to find out if the latest version of wine has been compiled with you distro. The version that is known to work for your distro is probably in the repos for your distro even if it is not the latest. Of course you could compile it your self but that is something I am not able to do even though I have been running Linux (several distros) for a couple years now.

The macles blog (on blogger is well worth reading.

I can't remember ATM how to enablr repositiries but if you have some enabled you can use the right click menu (if you have enabled it) to install wine. That's the easiest fo begineers like you and I.

I'm using Linux Mint on my AA1 and there wasn't any problem at all installing and using Wine. I'm using Wine for Spotify by the way.

    The repositories should contain 1.0.
If you really, really want 1.1.13, I fear you must compile it from source yourself.

ok, the thing that installs doesnt seem to allow me to use winefile :/ and im not sure but i think i need that (if you wanna know why, i think the only other way is navigating my directories with the terminal and im not too sure how to do that still, i can do it but knowing me id mess something up)

how can i get the full package instead of just the core thing? by full package i mean the configuration thing, winefile and all that other stuff

You can reach them with the regular file browser by opening "My Disk", pressing "Ctrl-H" (reveales hidden directories), and opening ".wine" and then "drive_c".

The full Wine version 1.1.9 is available from the package manager once you've updated the repositories.

Hi, yes installing almost anything with Wine was a bit of a trial for me, even with the latest version. Are you really against taking a look at Crossover Office? I downloaded and tried the demo of that a few days ago and minus a few problems programmes such as Office installed really easily. Where as I spent the best part of a day trying it with Wine and ended up getting little beyond a sea of error messages when it came to installing office, but other apps sometimes were a little easier.

Anyway on a side note, I would appreciate any comments people have on their long term experiences of Wine or Crossover. The latter only provides a 30-day demo which is almost enough, but as with nearly all computer software it's often months later when you try an obscure function /feature that things start going wrong. I would appreciate any comments people have especially with respect to running Office 2003 - which I have manged to install but produces a few errors from time to time. I am using the standard version fo Linpus plus a few extensions and hacks but don'r want to go down the route of trying out various Linux versions.

I have read some comments here and elsewhere which paint a positive view, especially of Crossover, however my own experiences while ok are still not exactly 100%.

    Kind regards,

    rod
