wireless cannot connect

My AA1 has been rock solid at home and on travel. Now unfortunately As i travel, I'm getting the dreaded cannot connect errors on (open) access points. I'm in a city with many APs, some connect, but most don't. Is there is anyone out there with an AA1 having trouble connecting to an AP, who can confirm if the AP is set to auto-select he channel, or if it's on a fixed channel. If it's auto, can you check if the AA1 connects when the channel is set to '1'?
