    Hi,

I recently bought an aspire one 150 with linux installed. I successfully installed windows xp on it and then downloaded all the drivers from the aspire website and installed them as well and all was great, everything worked as it should do.

My problem is, when I shutdown the computer and re boot, a red cross appears by the wireless icon at the bottom of the windows page. And the wireless adaptor does not find any network. The icon is still there in network connections, but with a red cross by it.

The only way I have found round this is to actually uninstall the wireless adaptor, then re-install it. It then works for as long as you have the computer on. But the moment you shutdown and re-boot, it is lost again and I have to go through the uninstall/re-install again..

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?? I have 2 x aspire ones and it is the same on both machines.. any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Two questions:

    1) If you go to Start -> Connect To -> Wireless Network Connection. Can you right-hand/alternate click on the Wireless Network Connection and set to Enable?

    2) If you go to Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update, try the custom option instead of Express. There should be an updated version of the wireless driver. See if that fixes the issue.

I had no wireless connection after installing XP. Go to link below and you can download all the drivers (wireless Atheros) Unzip and you'll find the set up icon. This sorted the problem in seconds. As you have installed drivers, I'm not sure if it will fix your problem, but it might be worth downloading again.

My question may be so elementary as to be laughable but here it is. Yesterday, I ordered an AAO with Windows XP and then began wondering if my Verizon mobile broadband will be workable. Clearly, I cannot load the Verizon "recognize me" program with the CD furnished by Verizon and successful in my old Dell. If I download the program to a flash drive and upload it to the AAO, will the AAO recognize the Verizon signal? Thanks.

No. US Versions of the AAO do not have any mobile braodband hardware installed. You'll need a USB express adapter from Verizon to use their system.

    sch911, thanks.

So, with the "USB express adapter" hanging off the AAO, where does the Verizon-furnished, USB modem go that I'm now using with my Dell? Off the end of the adapter?

Man, I knew this would happen, even on the beginners' forum. I don't know the appropriate names of the equipment and I have a suspicion that not everyone uses the same nomenclature all the time. What I have, and am using on my Dell at this moment, is identified by Verizon as a "UM175 USB Modem." It plugs into one of my USB ports and, after loading the "VZ Access Manager" software via a CD ROM, the modem receives a wireless signal which the Dell can read and then connects me to the internet.

So, I'm thinking that if I load the "VZ Access Manager" into my AAO via a flash drive, the AAO may be able to read the Verizon's wireless signal via the modem and connect me to the internet as does my Dell. However, after a couple of years of stumbling around, I have concluded that my understanding of what might work and what actually will work is seldom worth sharing with people who understand both hardware and software. I guess the best solution for me is to put the issue aside untill the AAO arrives o/a Monday.

    Thanks.

Yes that sounds right. Your Verizon UM175 is a broadband USB adapter. Just a tip, in the future start a new topic for your question rather than asking it at the end of an existing thread. That way others will be able to contribute/benefit from the thread's dialog.

    Cheers.

Thanks, Mate. I may come back with a "Hooah" if this works.

Well, I tried by downloading Verizon's wireless access manager software and while the flash drive was hanging off the machine, the screen told me that I had successfully downloaded the program. But, I could not get connected via the USB modem furnished by Verizon. So, I went to what must be the busiest Verizon store west of the Pecos and waited my turn. After perhaps 20 minutes, a beautiful young woman named Dominga came to my rescue and downloaded the correct program to the computer, and to my flash drive as a back-up, proved to me that the AAO worked fine and sent me on my way. Unfortunately, I now have lots of messages telling me that my new AAO has been invaded by Trojans, worms, and other bad guys, blocking my every attempt to do anything. I seem to be on the right road now but it is strewn with carpet tacks aand roofing nails.

The bottom line though is that the AAO can use Verizon's mobile broadband access to the net.
