I've just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 on a new Acer Aspire One. All went well until the wifi step. Here's what I've done:

I followed the guide to the letter.
    The device doesn't show up.
    The wifi light isn't on.
ifconfig doesn't show the device at all.
    Wired networking is fine.

I don't know where to turn but I really want it to work. Please help!

Sorry, I'm not an Ubuntu expert, but is 8.04.1 Hardy or Intrepid.
Actually, at present, both require the MadWifi drivers, the latest Intrepid updates have some sort of bug with the ath5k module (which runs the wireless.)

http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu ... .html#5007 gives instructions for getting and using the MadWifi driver. It also tells you how to get the LED to blink when there's a connection running. Personally, I find it annoying :) so I don't do it.

    Upgrade to Intrepid (8.10).

There should be an ISO available on the 31st. I understand that wireless works ootb.

Failing that, go here and follow the instructions. It worked for me.

I've tried the wireless tweaks from that guide like 5 times already, is there something special i should be doing?
    Any other possible solutions?

Did you try my guide? Which, among other things, points you to a newer version of the snapshot?

Also, as per another thread on the forums, you can try (assuming you're running Hardy)
    aptitude install linux-backports-modules-hardy

With a fairly current system, it seems as if the ath5k module provided will work with the card.

The problem for me was related to the hardware. For some reason the wireless device stopped working. I took the battery out and rebooted et viola it worked!

just making sure, after we finish doing the "tweaks" are we supposed to re-enable the hardware?
    (via System>Administration>Hardware drivers)

EDIT: Battery idea did not work for me :(
