Anyone know why MS Word would lock up my computer?

I cant replicate on demand but I can have the netbook lockup daily if I'm using MS Word and scrolling to a bottom of a document. Eventually, it just locks and I need to pull the battery. I can surf all day and don't get it to hang. I haven't really used other programs so I don't know if I get the same issue in a different program. I have had this computer for 1 week and only used MS Word and Internet explore to brows the web.

By the way this is an Aspire One 751 with 160GIG HD and 1GIG Ram.

Any ideas would be helpful. I bought this at Costco and they have a good return policey, so I'm ready to trade this Acer in for an HP Netbook with the 270 Intel chip if this can t be fixed.

    Thanks in advance.

No reply on this post - here is an update

I returned my first aspireone 751 today thinking maybe it's something wrong with my computer. Recall my MS Word 2003 would lock the computer up when paging down in a document.

My new netbook is doing the same crap.... Acer support is no good, they want to charge me for support. I'm going back and returning this netbook and going to try the HP Mini with the 270 chip in it, maybe i'll get better performance and maybe I can run Word.

You didn't mention if you installed all the Windows and Office updates from the Microsoft Update site - that should be the first thing you do after setup, whichever computer you get. If the Word document you're scrolling is huge, you might do better fixing the Page File size rather than let Windows manage it - I've set to min and max 2048MB and it works well.

Yes, I've installed both windows and word updates on my first aspire 751, then on the second 751 did not update os or word 2003, same result. The document I was working on was a small 3 pager. The lock up happened as I was paging down past the last page.

Keep in mind this was not consisten. I could work on the document for hours, then something would trigger the lockup as I paged down.

Just a note, this hp mini is ok, but I like the 751 much better even with the slow z520 processor. I'm test driving th hp a few more days and will make a decision to either wait a year for better technology or maybe someone will have an idea how to make Word 2003 work without locking my computer up.

Well, if you're using the HP the proof will be in the pudding: any more trouble with Word will be a problem with that installation (or with the file you're trying to work on) not the OS or the computer. I'll repeat above on MS updates and virtual memory, and add that I run CCleaner (files and registry cleanups) after setting up XP and after any major installation. These are my deathbed advice to my children. Good luck.
