I'm trying to install XP on my aao 110 with usb
I've used USB_MultiBoot_10 to put everything on USB-drive (kingston data traveler 4gb)
When i'm booting the usb everything works perfectly... I can set the install partition and everything.
When it's done with copying the files it's got to reboot.
If its rebooting, just before the install has got to begin it gives an error with missing hal.dll...
I've tried xp home retail, xp pro retail and vlited version of pro retail, but i keep getting the same error.
I''ve read all kinds of forums but it's all quite vage...
Can someone explain me what to do in some easy steps?

    Kind regards,
    Wouter Touw

Why does nobody buy an external dvd drive? it makes everything you ever do so simple. but oh well

you need to use the xp repair disc to fix it. dont ask me how, i guess you need to ake a bootable xp install drive, and there are meany threads about that already.

how did you get this error anyway, it usually comes about when you install os x on a partition side by side with xp, so im baffled by it..

i think you are using an oem version of xp, that doesn't seem to work with usb installs.

indeed cdrom installs go much smoother. you dont have to spend money on usb dvd drives...
i did not have one but i did have a usb hdd i used it like this:
    -open the usbhdd case
    -unplug the hdd
-take the dvd player and the flatcable out of my desktop pc
-plug it into the usb udd case
    - worked perfectly :D

i only used it twice (once for my previos eeepc and once for my current aao)

    i had the same problem.

after the setup has copied the files, you shouldnt boot from hdd. Boot again from the usb!
then choose the second option (i think), its something with "Gui..."

you have always boot from usb till the end of setup, until you see your desktop...

Yup, that is how you fix the hal.dll problem when installing XP from a USB stick :)

I had the same error and pulled many a hair out of my head.
The reason for the error is that Windows can't find itself during boot...

Here is the solution - you must edit boot.ini directly as rdisk was set incorrectly to 1.
This means you have to boot with something like bootit-ng www.terabyteunlimited.com.

It seems it is impossible to edit boot.ini with the windows recovery console. I tried but it did not set boot.ini correctly.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut

I had the same missing HAL.DLL, here's the problem and the solution I had.

I installed from a USB drive - this made Windows assume C: = USB drive, D: was the Windows drive

Fixing the rdisk(1) issue on the c:\boot.ini drive had no effect when I removed the USB drive (obvious)

So with the USB drive installed - boot into Windows
edit D:\boot.ini to fix the rdisk(1) issue
    reboot & remove USB
Windows now boots! (albeit as drive D: )
it all to works! Yay! :D

    Simeon,

Do you still have the recovery partition?
If yes, Windows probably thinks the partition is C.

In my case, I have completely reformatted my whole drive and installed Windows afresh -- and was very surprised that boot.ini was not set correctly. It took me awhile before I got out my tools, booted from a CD drive and examined the boot.ini. It is weird -- never seen something like that...

There is Plenty of this topics because nobody read the fucking readmes that comes with the software.

The Hall error happen when you dont make the bootable order with the usb first, and doesnt work with the F12 at boot screen.

    Use usb, select TXT Mode
Restar, then again , but now select GUI mode
If it keep restarting keep using gui mode until the os is totally installed, then, check the boot.ini to point to where it is supposed to be

Like, HardDisk(1) need to be Harddisk(0) and Partition(1) is fine.

    Cheeck those settings.

just to confirm that this solution works wonderfully.
    step by step:
plug in usb with winxp on into aspire and boot up, press f12 and boot from your usb stick.
    select TEXT install mode
when if asks you to reboot after copying files, press f12 again to boot from the usb stick
this time, select GUI install mode.
it will complete installation and show you your winxp desktop ( almost there! )
now open up my computer, and change the location in the top bar to D:\boot.ini
Edit the document so that it looks like this:
The only two changes that you should have to make is changing the number following the rdisk from 1 to 0.

Now remove your usb stick, reboot, and pray that it loads up win xp.
Works fine for me, i'm on it right now! And i have to say after only having this machine 2 days, its amazing!
