I apologize if I ruffled feathers... I get a little hotheaded.

Ross, the processes of search/finding out what steps one may need to take- commands, code editing etc... helps familiarize users with their system. They become intimate at a level of their choosing. This is the linux way. It is easier than it once was. Don't let this dissuade you- it is free to anyone.

Windows basically does everything for the user- which is fine, because it results in user-friendliness. That is the appeal. Most- not all Windows users will never know their system or what really is going on...just that it works most of the time. That is the Microsoft way. I know this because I've used MS longer than any linux distro.

I guess it boils down to a choice. What level of ownership does one desire in their equipment? That is the crux of the user problem.

To attempt to answer the question of the thread: we've basically got two different hardware configs that run dissimilar OS"s with differing user and energy needs. I think Linpus or XP would run fine but differently on either. Which one will still be running stable next year after hard use? I'd have to bet on Linpus installed on either platform.

Tonight I figured out how to get rid of the Acer desktop and replace it with the standard xfce ... complete with customizable wallpaper and desktop icons.

This changes the game for me, its really all I wanted. Wallpaper and desktop icons of my choosing. Yes, the dependency problems do remain, but my software doesn't run into them, but from the day-to-day its the wallpaper that mattered most.
