    Hi,

I just got a brand new AAO 110L.
I did the system update right after I got it online.
Just now I tried to play a YouTube video.
It loads fast over WLAN but it does not play at all :-( neither sound :-(
All it does is showing every, say, 10 seconds a new frame of the video but thats about it.
    Can anybody help me pleeeaasssee!!!

    TIA

Did you log on as the standard user (which is called 'user')?

After creating multiple user accounts, I had troubles with sound and webcam when logging in as a non-standard user.

Check the permissions of /dev/audio, /dev/sound* and /dev/video*. If only the standard user can write to these files, things won't work.

I think I fixed it like this: http://johan.zandhoven.org/node/13#comment-6

    Thanks for the advice.
But after klicking on a bunch of different YouTube movies it all of a sudden played it incl. sound.

However, if I play it in full screen it is pretty slow and studdering.
Frist I thought it is the Atom that is not made for movies but after I installed VLC I can nicely play my AVIs in full screen.
Only YouTube full screen seems to be a bit studdering although the video has already been downloaded all the way.
Do you have an idea what it could be?

I've a work around for you if you want.

    Install AcetoneIso2 from here.

    http://www.acetoneiso.netsons.org/viewpage.php?page_id=2

(Fedora version is the one you'll need of course)

Among it's miriad of usefull functions is a YouTube download function. Paste the youtube url in the box and acetoneiso2 will download the flash video file to a folder of your choice, Where you can play it back with Vlc.
It will also convert it to an AVI for you if you want.

These are AcetoneISO's Features (Which are centered around iso images):

    - Mount automatically ISO, MDF, NRG, BIN, NRG without the need to insert admin password! Only single-track images are supported for the moment.
    - A nice display which shows current images mounted and possibility to click on it to quickly reopen mounted image
    - Convert 2 ISO all image types:
*.bin *.mdf *.nrg *.img *.daa *.dmg *.cdi *.b5i *.bwi *.pdi and much more
    - Extract images content to a folder:
*.bin *.mdf *.nrg *.img *.daa *.dmg *.cdi *.b5i *.bwi *.pdi and much more
    - Play a DVD Movie Image with Kaffeine / VLC / SMplayer with auto-cover download from Amazon
    - Generate an ISO from a Folder or CD/DVD
    - Check MD5 file of an image and/or generate it to a text file
    - Encrypt / Decrypt an image
    - Split / Merge image in X megabyte
    - Compress with High Ratio an image in 7z format
    - Rip a PSX cd to *.bin to make it work with epsxe/psx emulators
    - Restore a lost CUE file of *.bin *.img
    - Convert Mac OS *.dmg to a mountable image
    - El-Torito support to create ISO bootable Cd
    - Mount an image in a specified folder from the user
    - Supports UDF ISO filesystem images
    - Create a database of images to manage big collections
    - Extract the Boot Image file of a CD/DVD or ISO
    - Backup a CD-Audio to a *.bin image
    - Service Menu for Konqueror and D3lphin
    - Complete localization for English, Italian, French, Spanish, Polish and much more!
    - Quick and simple utility to Rip a DVD to Xvid AVI
    - Quick and simple utility to convert a generic video (avi, mpeg, mov, wmv, asf) to Xvid AVI
    - Quick and simple utility to convert a FLV video to AVI
    - Utility to download videos from Youtube!

Linux.com article here http://www.linux.com/feature/150995 this is where I discovered it.
It is installed on my AA1 but I have to admit it gets more use on my 17" Ubuntu laptop simply because of the built in DVD rewriter.

Alternatively there's a Firefox extension called 'Magic's Video Downloader' which does similar things.

Thanks, this sounds like a lightweight approach.
But I am still wondering if other people experience similar problems while running YT videos in full screen under Linpus?

no not really, but I dont watch a lot of youTube anyways.
All my DivX movies work however just great under VLC and I guess DivX puts more work on the Atom CPU than youTube does.
So I dont know, maybe there is something else fishy with youTube with the AAO.

I think I found at least a workaround that might work (havent tested it yet on the AAO but it technically works on my Mac).

Copy the URL of the youTube video on open the video with VLC.
Maybe VLC does a better memory management than FF with the Flash Plugin.
VLC can also run in full screen..

    It's worth a try.

    Hi

I cant get VLC to play the URL. Im not sure if i am doing it correctly.

    In VLC, i click:
    FILE,
    OPEN NETWORK STREAM,
I paste in the web address from youtube into the "Advanced Customized" box at the bottom.
    Click OK
    Click Play.
    It does nothing.

I also tried paste the link into the "same screen "HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS" box after selecting that radio button.
    Still nothing.

    What am i doing wrong?

    Cheers

    Hello everybody,

has anyone found out why the video stream is stuttering? Is there any possibility to see the youtube videos in Firefox or Opera? I tried the same video with a Win XP installation on my AAO (dual boot system) and the playback is flawless. So the AAO can play streaming videos. To my uneducated mind it seems like a LINPUS problem. Maybe a faulty driver? Old java version? I don't know. Ideas anybody?

    Thank you!

The Flash player is widely known to perform [much] better on Windows than Linux or Mac. I have both a Linpus AAO and a very speedy MacBook Pro and I can tell you Flash is a dog on both (unless the Mac is booted into Windows). I don't think there is a technical reason beyond Adobe putting the bulk of their dev money into the largest platform. Flash 10 is supposed to have a bump, so you may try that (though I have heard about some problems, I haven't tried it yet myself). Ars posted some basic benchmarks for both OS X and Linux:

Cant get it to work under the AAO neither. However, it works on the Mac.
Must be a different version than the one available for the AAO.
I havent tried VLC 0.9 on the AAO yet, maybe it'll work with it.
